Why should I fill out the Census?
The federal government uses the information from the Census to distribute millions of dollars every year to New York City, but only 10% of people in the Lower East Side have sent it back so far. In 2000, only 60% of East Village/Lower East Side residents filled out the Census. That hurt all of NYC — we lost millions of dollars in federal funds for mass transit, healthcare, education, and senior centers. We even lost a seat in Congress.
