Working to preserve and develop affordable and environmentally healthy housing and community/cultural spaces on the Lower East Side

SPURA Matters Report - Sep. 2009 PDF  | Print |

The Seward Park Urban Renewal Area (SPURA) consists of 10 city-owned sites (6 south of Delancey Street and 4 north of Delancey Street), comprising 7 acres of land. It has sat vacant for over 40 years. Read the SPURA Matters report which is based on a series of Community Visioning sessions involving hundreds of area residents to learn about how the sites could be developed in a way that benefits the surrounding community. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to help start a community-driven process to put the site back into a broadly productive use.

Manhattan Community Board 3 is currently in the process of elaborating a set of principles for redevelopment, and the organizations that are part of SPURA Matters, including the Cooper Square Committee, hope that this report can help guide that process.
