Councilwoman Rosie Mendez cordially invites you to honor the memory of
Community Activist Mary Spink
Memorial Service
Sunday, January 22nd
The Great Hall at Cooper Union
3rd Avenue and East 7th Street
5:30 p.m.
Mary and Rosie were friends for nearly two decades. They became good friends while serving on the Board of Directors of the Lower East Side Peoples Federal Credit Union. Rosie said: "If I had to sum up Mary in a few words I'd have to say that she had a sharp tongue and a huge heart and above all she immensely loved her neighbors and the Lower East Side. It's a huge loss for our
community and a personal loss for me."
A Lower East Side Poem by Miguel Pinero
Just once before I die
I want to climb up on a
tenement sky
to dream my lungs out till
I cry
then scatter my ashes thru
the Lower East Side.
So let me sing my song tonight
let me feel out of sight
and let all eyes be dry
when they scatter my ashes thru
the Lower East Side.
Dear Friends,
I'm sorry to report that Mary Spink, Director of the Lower East Side Peoples Mutual Housing Association, died Sunday night. She had been ill since last Summer, but this was still unexpected. Mary did amazing work, developing hundreds of low income apartments on vacant sites on the Lower East Side. She was active on Community Board 3, including the Seward Park Committee. I had tremendous respect for her, and appreciated being able to call her for advice upon occasion.
A memorial service will be held this Sunday, January 22, at 5:30pm in the Great Hall at Cooper Union at 7th Street and 3rd Avenue in her honor. We are extending an invitation to the entire Lower East Side to join friends and colleagues at the memorial service.
