The Real Deal - July 13, 2010
Advocates charge Senate Democrats with a disregard for tenants' rights.
About a dozen activists were arrested outside New York City Housing Authority's Downtown offices today, during a protest criticizing the Democratic-controlled State Senate for failing to vote on a 10-bill package of legislation that could potentially strengthen rent-stabilization practices in New York City.
The protest, which was led by umbrella activist group Real Rent Reform Campaign, included approximately 200 activists from various community groups, according to Mario Mazzoni, the lead organizer with tenants' rights group Metropolitan Council on Housing, and one of the people arrested.
He was one of 13 people arrested and charged with disorderly conduct outside NYCHA's office at 250 Broadway at around 1 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department.

The Cooper Square Committee has prepared an analysis of the Seward Park Urban Redevelopment Area (SPURA), including the racial and economic demographics of the surrounding community, housing indicators, local school enrollment, day care providers, amount of open space and other useful information. We also looked at the zoning of the 10 SPURA sites to assess how much housing and commercial development they can accommodate, and we recommended zoning changes to allow for development of a sustainable mixed-income community on the sites. We hope you will read it, and we welcome your feedback.

The Cooper Square Committee is launching a Construction Monitoring Project. Do you know of stalled construction sites in the East Village/Lower East Side? This includes sites with a Stop Work Order, sites that have expired permits, or where no construction activity has been happening for a while? If so, let us know.
The following is a list compiled by the NYC Dept. of Builidngs of stalled construction sites in Community Board 3 of Manhattan (East Village/Lower East Side/Chinatown) as of Feb. 27, 2010. We will be adding more information about each site in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, let us know about other sites in CB3, and we will look into them and post information about the status of the sites. If there are unsafe conditions, call 311 to report them. Also, please contact us at 212-228-8210 to let us know, and we will follow up with the Dept. of Buildings and Community Board 3.

On March 2, 2010, Mayor Bloomberg signed the Tenant Fair Chance Act, under which "landlords are required to tell prospective tenants whether they are using a tenant screening service, and to provide contact information for the tenant screening company so that tenants can clear records that are erroneous."

The Cooper Square Committee is seeking new Steering Committee members to help advance our organization’s affordable housing preservation mission. We welcome community residents of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, ages, genders, and professional experiences. Low-income people are especially encouraged to apply since they bring a valuable perspective and can be very effective advocates for the population we aim to serve.
